Golden Time

 We were given a little treat for Golden Time on Friday, but we had to work for it. Mrs T tied little lollipops to the display wires for us. We were allowed to eat them, but we could not use our hands or the furniture. 

It was pretty funny.

The kids in Room 14 are becoming responsible for recording our learning with ipads - photos, videos etc. As you can see below, they are discovering quite creative ways to share the events and their thoughts. Ooops, Ian. I think you got caught using the furniture to climb up and eat your lollipop. Hehehehehe! I love working with this class - they are hilarious.

Tālofa lava!

This week is Samoan language week. The theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week is Fa’aāuāu le Folauga i le Va’a o Tautai - Continue the Voyage with Competent Wayfinders of the Ocean. It's all about the journey of sustaining and maintaining the language and culture and recognises the importance of having the right people and tools to do this. The Ministry for Pacific People has links to all sorts of resources. HERE is a link to some everyday words and phrases that you and your aiga might like to try this week.

Cross Country

The weather for our cross country isn't looking great so a few extra prayers to Saint Joseph wouldn't go astray. We'll keep you up-to-date - as soon as we know anything, you'll know it, too. 

Young Vinnies Talent Quest

The Young Vinnies are organising a Talent Show.  Auditions for Years 3-4 will be held on Monday this week. Singing, dancing, weird skills, musical instruments... All kids are invited to show off their weird and wonderful skills and talents.

Pentecost Mass

On Friday, we will celebrate Pentecost Mass. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. It's when the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles and they began the Church's mission to spread the good news. Please make sure your children are in correct uniform - this also means no jewellery (except Taonga) or nail polish. Thank you.

Our Learning

Literacy: Narratives. What are they? How are they organised? What sort of language will we see?

Maths: Multiplication. We are learning how skip counting, repeated addition and using known facts can help us solve multiplication problems.

RE: We are learning that Jesus calls us to holiness and wholeness in the teaching of the Salt and Light.

(Mt 5:13-16). We will also be learning about/celebrating Pentecost.

Structured Literacy: Mrs D's groups are working on 'silent e' and 'r controlled syllables'. Mrs T's groups are working on 'Y can sound like the long e' at the end of multi-syllable words. Sounds fancy, eh? These spelling rules will also be linked to learning when reading and writing.

Learning with the Stars

 

Yesterday morning Mr Blackman came to visit us. He is from the Rotorua Astronomical Society. He told us all about the Matariki cluster Here are some of the interesting things that we learned...

There are different types of stars

Matariki is not a constellation it is a cluster

One light-year is 1 trillion kilometres

There are 9 stars in Matariki that we see but there could be 12

If you find Orion in the sky, follow his sword to Taurus and then down a bit to find Matariki

There are different phases for the moon it takes 1 month to go through all the phases. Originally the word month was month.

On 24th June is when Matariki is far enough from the sun that we can see it rise. Some people cook hangi and the steam going up from the hangi is food for the stars.

Some Maori believe that when you die you go into a waka in the sky (Matariki is the front of the waka then Tauras and Orion). At Matariki time the waka tips up and sends their souls into the sky to make new stars.

Matariki can be seen in lots of different places and it has different names. In Japan the Matariki cluster is called Subaru.

Mrs T and Mrs D have also discovered that we have some little astro-scientists in our classes.

week 4 Term 2 2022

Pink Shirt day was a huge success and a whole lot of fun - thanks for your support. We are continuing to talk to our kids about our school values AND how to identify and manage our emotions. It is really lovely seeing how the kids are responding to these messages. The support and encouragement that they are giving to each other is so valuable and absolutely beautiful to witness. I am so very proud of my little Room 14 CREW.

Cross Country

This Week's Learning

Maths - We are exploring multiplication. We are looking at how skip counting, repeated addition and/or using our knowledge of tens and ones can make multiplication easier. 

Literacy - We are looking at how our learning in Structured Literacy can be applied in reading and writing. We will also be playing around with some new vocabulary to make our writing more interesting.

Religious Ed - We are learning about Jesus Ascension into Heaven. There is a special liturgy on Wednesday (run by Totara team).

Project Based Learning - we have a visitor coming from the Rotorua Astronomical Society, this week. He is going to talk to us about the Matariki stars, legends and seasons.

WEEK 3 TERM 2 2022

 A big thank you to everyone for your support and patience while I have been at home with covid - I guess we'll all get a dose eventually but we'll be doing everything we can to delay that as much as possible.  Masks, hand sanitising and cleaning surfaces continue to be part of our daily routine. It's quite amazing how different the symptoms are from person to person so if in doubt, please test. I had no symptoms during the day but at home felt a slight chill so decided to test just in case. I was 97% sure that it would be negative. Thank goodness our wonderful Mrs Kusabs was able to jump in.

On Thursday 2nd June we will be holding our annual Cross Country for Year 4-6 in the Redwoods.

Please, if you haven't yet filled out the cross country form you need to even if your child isn't planning to take part. At this stage only 14/26 of our Room 14 families have completed this info. 

School Photos

School photos are scheduled for tomorrow. Please make sure your children are tidy and that hair is tied back. Would you also please check that school jerseys are named so if students need to take off their jerseys they won’t get mixed up. 

Structured Literacy Parent Information Meeting.

Our consultant, Marion Kirby from Learning Matters will give you a brief overview of how the brain learns to read - you may learn a thing or two yourself!

Week 1 Term 2 2022

 Welcome Back

It has been a busy holiday and I am excited about all of the learning we have planned for this term. Our wonderful caretaker and his incredible team have been hard at work and the school looks amazing - big thanks to Richard, Deb and Ray. Room 14 now has some gorgeous new carpet BUT the timing didn’t work in my favour and most of our classroom is still stacked up in the hall. Guess what we’re doing on Monday morning?  

Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences

Bookings are now open. Families can choose the day that will work best for them. Students and their parent(s) need to attend a 10 minute appointment on one of these two days. There are a number of ways bookings can be made.

Mother’s Day

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day and the PTA is running a Gift Store for the children to buy their treasures for their mums.

Reminders:

• School starts at 8.45 am for all students. There will not be staff at the gates in the morning and students will be permitted to come into school as they arrive. We do ask that you drop your child off at a reasonable time - when the kids are in the room we like to give them our full attention so 8-8:30am is often the only time we have to set up the learning for the day and catch up on paperwork.

• School finishes at 3.00 pm for all students except bus students who will leave their classrooms at 2.50 pm.

• Students are to sanitise their hands as they come through the school gates and, yes, we are still wearing masks.

• If your child is late to school they must report to the office before they go to class.

• If your child needs to isolate because they have Covid they must isolate for 7 days, effectively 5 days of school. There will no longer be a Home Learning programme offered to students who are absent. Children should just focus on getting well.

• Winter uniform is to be worn. We do appreciate that some uniform items are unavailable at the moment.

• Charge your Chromebooks! We will be using them this week. A few people got caught out last term.

• Don't forget to fill in your reading log - we want that class treat so we need every single reading log to be handed in.
